Formwork is one type of temporary mould and is an important part when constructing a building with concrete. It is designed to contain freshly poured concrete and mould it into the required shape until concrete has cured sufficiently to become self-supporting.
Good concrete finish cannot be made from a poor mould, thus formwork is very important in producing good concrete finish. Besides that, it has to be designed to take the concrete load and the working load generated from workers and plant.
Formwork allows contractors to cast and construct the main parts of the Building which are required to be strong & and support the structure such as floors, walls & smaller parts such as stairs, relatively quickly.

Formwork finds its trace almost 2,000 years ago in Rome. The dome of Pantheon in Rome was made of lightweight concrete and the under face of the Dome, you can see the moulding effect of formwork used at that time. But it was only at the end of 19th century that the use of concrete became common, with the invention of reinforced concrete. As the new technology of RCC came in, construction saw a drastic demand for mass developments of concrete housing & infrastructure and that is how current day Formwork came into existence.
Formwork is made up of different types of materials, and it must be strong enough to support the imposed loads of the fluid concrete and the design needs to account for any additional imposed loads from the equipment or machinery placed on it during construction.
The different combination of above material is also used in Formwork system. Today, Steel and Aluminium is preferred choice for concrete construction considering the long life and durability of these materials as against timber.
Generally, the Formwork for vertical concreting is called Wall Formwork or Wall Forms, and the Formwork for horizontal concreting is called Slab Formwork or Floor Forms. In either case the Formwork sometimes also called ‘shuttering’ must be sufficiently propped and braced, both horizontally and vertically, so the concrete retains its shape until cured. The formwork is generally removed once the concrete has gained sufficient strength.
The Formwork maintains concrete in a particular shape during its curing period whereas the Falsework is used to temporarily prop and support an existing structure while it is under construction. Falsework can also be used to support formwork during the period that the structure it is not self-supporting.
